Back of the Bus: Race Mass Transit and Inequality →
dominickbrady: This piece covers Atlanta as well and it talks about how racial politics in the 1970’s helped shape MARTA’s design and how that’s hampered Atlanta’s growth.  They spend some time talking about Clayton County opting out of joining MARTA with their transit system only to end up having to get rid of their program, leaving riders stranded. This is a great article that, in part,...

Creating a walkable college town in Macon
Thought I’d step out of Atlanta and share a great story about a project to create a walkable college town in the historic neighborhoods of Macon, GA, near Mercer University. The goal is to create a vibrant “college town” area that is connected to the city’s downtown via tree-lined streets, improved sidewalks and bike lanes, and teeming with attractive entertainment, business...

Malls-to-urbanism opportunites for suburbs
Ellen Dunham-Jones, a Georgia Tech professor, is featured in a New York times blog post about turning dead malls in the suburbs into urban centers that serve the aging population of the suburbs. Here’s a great quote: “The idea is to demolish a dead mall and build the downtown area a suburb never had,” she said. “Three or four stories of apartments above the retail on the ground floor,...

Woodruff Park in the Snow
I enjoyed seeing Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta in the snow a few days ago. It was mostly ice when I took these, but it was still pretty and kinda fun to scoot/crunch around in. My son had a good time holding my hand and skating on the icy ground.

The Atlanta Beltline in the Snow
We took a long walk on the Beltline in the snow and ice yesterday and got to see some nice winter views of the NE section. That’s the Ford Factory Lofts on Ponce above. Below is the snow-covered bridge over Ponce. And this one below was really cool to me — looking at the leafy magnolia and evergreen trees against that deep blue sky (that’s the Telephone Lofts on Ralph...

A train is moving successfully under this snow
I’ve enjoyed reading all the posts about people having good experiences with MARTA today on this Atlanta Journal Constitution blog. Though the highways and surface streets are dangerous or just plain impassable (I just watched a dude slide backwards on a Peachtree Street hill in his truck), the MARTA train is getting it done. Providing transportation alternatives is a good idea. Putting...

Struggling with the safety thing
This is how the new year is going so far with my family’s attempt to live a walkable, transit-filled life in downtown Atlanta. Three months after moving me, my wife, our son and assorted pets to a downtown apartment, two blocks north of the Five Points MARTA station, we get a fatal stabbing and a fatal shooting all in one week: Five Points MARTA shooting: One dead, one arrested Rueben...

Carnegie Education Pavilion
Travis at the (very cool) Tour Atlanta blog posts about the Carnegie Education Pavilion on Peachtree Street, just north of its intersection with Baker Street. This is just one of the great things you can see in the walkable part of the city — and something you can only truly enjoy when you’re out of the car. Back when I was fresh out of the ‘burbs and was too ignorant to know...
