Sad Atlanta needs some good news
Seriously, y’all. I need to just stop reading the news for a while. It feels like Atlanta and its environs have gotten pummeled in the last few months. Here are a few economic tidbits from recent articles that have got me sadder than Keanu:
1.) Our state is filled with people living paycheck-to-paycheck, more so than any other:

[A} study…ranked Georgia dead last in terms of the financial security of its residents, based on factors such as their high debt load, lack of savings and assets, and the prevalence of personal bankruptcies.
from Georgia is dead last in financial security, AJC, 2/10/2012

2.) Metro Atlanta is a national leader in economic laggard-ness (laggardry?)

A sprawling Southern metropolis, Atlanta has become one of the biggest laggards in the economic recovery.
from In Atlanta, Housing Woes Reflect Nation’s Pain, New York Times, 2/12/2012

3.) The city of Atlanta has the highest income inequality of any in the US. Y’all, we even beat out New Orleans:

The city of Atlanta had the highest income inequality rate in the country from 2005 to 2009, just ahead of New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Miami, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report.
from Atlanta had greatest income inequality in U.S., Census show; metro far better, AJC, 10/27/2011

But then I may just be in the dumps this week because of the national press over our gay-bashing neighborhood gangs and because my family’s CVS of choice just got robbed of its cigarettes and hair extensions.
So — anyone got some good economic news for Atlanta? Something to cheer us (and by ‘us’ I mean ‘me’) up a bit?
