Be still my beating heart! It looks like there might be a little less of this:
and a lot more of this in Gwinnett County, one of the sprawliest of Atlanta’s sprawlburb counties:
That bottom photo is of construction (now completed) in downtown Suwanee in Gwinnett, and it looks like we might be seeing more of this kind of walkable density in the future if things go well.
The leaders of the county are working with a smart-growth consultancy to find ways to move the area away from the sprawl patterns of the past and planning a better future like the one seen in Suwanee. From Smart Growth America:
"Gwinnett County is quickly bumping up against the limits of suburban development. Older retail and jobs centers are changing rapidly and some are in decline. As is the case everywhere in metropolitan Atlanta, traffic congestion is overwhelming.
…Last week, Smart Growth America led a two-day workshop to help civic and community leaders in Gwinnett County work through some of the challenges associated with implementing these ambitious plans”
Good news! And a great reminder that walkable, smart development can happen anywhere in the metro — not just in the City of Atlanta.
