A VIsit to Downtown Hampton, GA

I love visiting the historic downtowns of small towns around Georgia. Even when most of the store fronts are empty (as is too often the case), I can still enjoy looking at the buildings and imagining the street scenes that once existed — and that could again, some day.

On a recent trip to Hampton to visit the home of my favorite local brewery, I was happy to find that almost all the store fronts downtown were filled. Also, the sidewalks were in great shape and there was a lot of nice landscaping to make walking around a good experience.

Coolest things I found: the Amazon Forest Deli is a restaurant that has a small grocery section; there are “luxury lofts” available, so it’s a mixed-use downtown; you can smell the malts cooking at the Jailhouse Brewery (built inside an actual old jailhouse) from blocks away, so the downtown smells like coking beer.

Hampton is about 30 miles due south of downtown Atlanta.
